Humane Education Activity: What Do Halloween Costumes Say?

Skim through the Halloween costume stores or catalogs, and you'll find stereotypes and questionable messages galore. What do Halloween costumes say about gender, ethnicity, age, and values? What messages are being represented?

Our friends at Teaching Tolerance offer a great activity to explore this topic. It's primarily for grades K-5, but add in an examination of the sexualization of costumes for tween and teen girls, and you can adapt it for high school students. A great activity for developing critical thinking and media literacy skills.
